Hey travelers!

You already know that the province of Alicante has many treasures for you to discover during your trip, and one of the most important, without a doubt, is the historical – cultural heritage made up of the large number of castles and fortresses that you will find in Alicante.

In this article on our blog I invite you to learn more about the Castillo de la Atalaya, also known as the Castillo de los Pies Negros or Villena’s Castle, as almost everyone has heard it called.

Located in the city of Villena, to the northwest of the interior of the province of Alicante, it stands imposingly on the Mount of San Cristóbal. It has been built by the Muslims around the 12th century, and re-built in the 14th century. Later, it has undergone several periods of restoration to reach the well-preserved fortress that we see today.

The Atalaya Castle, the largest castle that make up the Vinalopó Castle Route, of great tourist interest in the province, has witnessed major clashes many years ago. The Revoltas de las Germanías, the War of the Spanish Succession and the War of Independence against France, are some of the historical events in which the castle has played an important role.

Declared, since 1931, a Historic-Artistic Monument and Asset of Cultural Interest of the Province of Alicante, we recommend that you take a guided tour of the castle to see all its areas, the beautiful Torre del Homenaje, the Plaza de Armas, the Almohad vaults, and discover the history of such an important fortress for Alicante and for all of Spain.
